In the First Tiberium War, the Brotherhood of Nod relied on supplies delivered by airplanes to provide their forward bases with vehicles. The place where they dropped the supplies and vehicles was the Airstrip. No planes landed, instead slowing down and ejecting the vehicles onto the runway.
Before the Second Tiberium War, Nod did not use a war factory on the battlefield to manufacture units. Instead their units were flown in by a large cargo plane from a remote production facility or arsenal, allowing rapid deployment of forces in a given area without the need to expedite too much credits.
Once the commander had requested a unit, a signal was sent and the plane loaded with the specific unit. When the cargo plane arrived at the Airstrip it dropped off the unit there and returned to its base. Since transporting only a single unit at a time was a very inefficient concept and it was proven possible for astute GDI commanders to trace Nod bases by tracking the planes, Nod eventually abandoned the Airstrip system before the Second Tiberium War and switched to estabilishing weapons factory structures like GDI.
For a list of units deliverable by plane, see list of units delivered to Nod airfields.
