[edit] Background
Ever since armored warfare began, one of the important questions was: How to keep the infantry with the tanks. Tanks without infantry could quickly be slaughtered by rocket infantry, which often necessitated an infantry screen. Furthermore, some infantry, such as commandos, needed a safe way to get in and out of difficult combat situations. The Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) was the solution.
Given their reliance on infantry, the Allied Forces were the creators of the APC. The vehicle was small, heavily armored and fast. Mounting a small machine gun, it was effective against all infantry. It's speed and ability to crush infantry made it highly effective against soldiers of all types - with the exception of the shock trooper, whose armored suit prevented him from being crushed. However, the machine gun was still effective against these targets. Although it could be used to transport engineers, the number of engineers required to capture most buildings meant that this was often not an effective tactic. The APC could be chronoshifted, but any infantry inside would be simply erased from time, thus making this an ineffective strategy for commanders. The Allied Phase transport was built around an M113 chassis.
The design eventually phased out after the war and was replaced by other kinds of transports.
[edit] Game Unit
Compared to the Ranger, the APC has the same weapon but is much more durable, and unlike the Ranger it can crush infantry.
[edit] Trivia
During the Soviet campaign of Red Alert various APCs appear to be on the Soviet side. The chronosphere may be used to teleport an APC, but any infantry inside will be lost. The phase transport is based on the APC.
