During Great World War II, in an effort to counter Allied guerilla formations and prevent the infiltration of their infrastructure and command, the USSR trained large numbers of Alsatian Shepherds to sniff out and kill enemy infantry. These powerful canines were raised from a pup to be a killing machine and performed flawlessly against the enemy, although with heavy casualties.
Following the war, canines were no longer trained for military service, due to the morally questionable explanation for their deployment.
