Australia is both a name for the world's smallest continent, and the country that is comprised of said continent, the Island of Tasmania, and a number or smaller islands around it. During the Third Tiberium War, it was a major theater of war, eventually falling under the control of the Brotherhood of Nod.

Australia has been settled for over 420 centuries by the Aboringes, the first known human inhabitants. Dutch Navigators, the first Europeons to discover Australia, arrived in 1606, though no effort was made to colonize it. The English explorer James Cook claimed it for the United Kingdom as "New South Wales", over 160 years after the Dutch discovered it. Originally used as a penal colony, Australia became settled, though Europeon immigrants typically stayed near the large coastal cities. Aboriginal population declined, largely through the spread of infectious disease.

Australia later gained Commonwealth Status and a written Constitution in 1901. It allied with the United States during the Second World War. During the First Tiberium War, it's Government was allied with the Global Defense Initiative, though Nod recruited and trained in remote areas of the Outback.

Following the Firestorm Crisis, Marcion led his Black Hand followers into Australia after Anton Slavik's assassination. Marcion began actively recruiting for his religious army, clashing with the Steel Talons forces deployed in that region. Additionally, GDI set up research facilities in Australia; including ones for reverse engineering Nod optic camouflage technology, and for experimental studies in Liquid Tiberium. When Kane activated LEGION, the AI used forces gathered following the Rio Insurrection to first recapture Nod's stealth data. Then, the AI captured Marcion, who "repented" his heresy against Kane. Finally, to signify the Brotherhood's reunification, LEGION was sent to disrupt the Liquid Tiberium experiments. The resulting explosion was an environmental catastrophe, accelerating the spread of Tiberium over Australia. The mainstream press believed it to be a horrible accident; while Nod forces began organizing.

Australia's condidtion worsened, by 2047, the Australian Continent, New Zealand, and several other locations in the South Pacific were officially known as yellow zone Y-4, though large urban centers that managed to maintain relatively low amounts of infestation, such as Sydney, were considered GDI-occupied blue zones, and full of civilians. The Australian Yellow Zone was an area of strategic importance for the Brotherhood of Nod, with the Outback areas serving as CENTCOM for the A-NZ theater of war. The most important places in Australia for Nod were Ayers Rock, where Kilian Qatar's headquarters were located, and King's Canyon, where Ajay had a field command post.

Ayers Rock came under assault during the middle stages of the Third Tiberium War, and Kilian requested reinforcements. However, Kane diverted all available troops to Temple Prime, abandoning Australia while focusing on the defense of what Kilian had called a lost cause. When the reinforcements arrived during the Siege of Temple Prime, they quickly turned traitor. Though beaten, Kane was furious, and ordered a loyal Commander to Australia. Shortly afterwards, Temple Prime, and most of Eastern Europe, was destroyed by the explosion of a Liquid Tiberium bomb. Kane was presumed dead, and Kilian took over.

Within the Australian Yellow Zone, during the Third Tiberium War, GDI attempted to relocate its nuclear weapons from undisclosed silos in the outback to its primary bases in Sydney. However, an elite strike force from Nod's A-NZ forces (those trained in Australia and acclimated to the terrain) intercepted the GDI convoy and stole the nuclear warheads. This occasion also marked the first hard contact between the Scrin vanguard and Nod forces, as the Nod forces had to guard their captured WMDs from the initial alien landing party until Nod Carryalls arrived to extract them.

In addition, Sydney was the location of the short-lived alliance between GDI and Nod against the Scrin invaders. While allied with GDI, Nod defended GDI assets, but also stole GDI launch codes for the stolen nuclear weapons. When Nod was helping cover GDI's retreat from Sydney, Kane revealed himself to be be alive. Acting on Kane's orders, Nod forces used the nuclear weapons against their former allies, destroying the GDI presence in Sydney.

Kane proceeded to engage Kilian Qatar at her Ayers Rock command post, taking her for a traitor for having allied with GDI. Upon the defeat of Kilian, her forces relinquished command back to Kane. GDI used this as an opportunity to attempt to wipe out the surviving forces. However, Nod forces destroyed the GDI presence, securing the Australian Yellow Zone. Kane transferred his headquarters to Ayers Rock after sacrificing Sarajevo, and remained as such until Nod captured a Threshold tower. Afterwards, the nod forces stationed there scavanged the base and transferred their technological and military assets to what is believed to be there new temple in an unyet undisclosed location. However this is GDI INOps speculation and has not been confirmed.
