YR Boomer Icons

The Boomer attack sub was Yuri's only combatant naval unit. It was essentially a combination of the Soviet Typhoon Attack Sub and Dreadnought designs. Boomers were especially prevalent around Yuri's essential installations, such as his main cloning facility in Australia, and his secret island space facility.

History

Maintaining position and depth.
- Boomer

Yuri's Boomer was capable of firing twin torpedoes at once, as well as launching ballistic missiles onto shore installations when surfaced. This, along with increased heavy armour made it both more versatile and powerful than the Typhoon Submarine used by Soviet forces; which could not attack land targets and could launch only one torpedo at a time. An elite Boomer can fire four torpedoes and its SLBM becomes considerably more powerful. Due to their design Giant Squids are unable to attack Boomers. However, the Boomer is not very swift and does not utilize weaponry as powerful as a Dreadnought (though the stealth it has largely compensates for that). It is also completely helpless against aircraft; making it particularly weak against the Allies navy. A weakness exacerbated by the fact it is Yuri's sole offensive naval unit.

RA2Sovietlogo The following is based on the Soviet campaign for Yuri's Revenge and contradicts canon sources.

The main Boomer assembly line was on the aforementioned secret island in the Pacific ocean, but was destroyed by the unnamed Soviet Commander.

Game unit

Yuri used the Boomer as a general purpose sea unit in a bid to control the seas. The Boomer is capable of attacking all varieties of units except aircraft. However, when surfaced the Boomer can be attacked by most units. In spite of the Boomer's strong armour, it is still vulnerable to Allied Destroyer and their Osprey aircraft. Even though the Boomer can easily sink any other ship one on one, the Destroyer and Typhoon cost half as much, and in the Typhoon's case could cost 3/8s as much with the Industrial Plant. Knowing the -then secret- existence of giant squid breeding program, Yuri design its Boomer with anti tangling measure in mind.

When the Boomer surfaces to fire its missiles, it is incapable of defending itself, leaving it vulnerable to air strikes. Furthermore, any land based unit with a great enough range can hit it. Finally, anti-aircraft weapons can destroy its missiles, protecting anything targeted by the Boomer. All ships equipped with sonar, such as the Destroyer, can detect it and then attack it and relay its position to other units and buildings. As with other naval vessels, it is vulnerable to SEALs, provided that the infantry is not killed before planting the charges. The SLCM employed require more time to prepare and launch but the missile it self is much more armored than Dreadnought's missile or Carrier's strike plane.

A pack of Boomer submarines is a fierce enemy and can send entire fleets beneath the waves (especially if the element of surprise is on their side, which was usually the case). A pack of all elite Boomers is considered such a threat that commanders would go to great lengths to deal with them before they could get a chance to destroy their base. If destroying Boomers was not an option, commanders are best advised to build as many anti-aircraft defenses and produce as many anti-aircraft units as possible and distribute them around the base as well as possible before the submarines could level the Construction Yard. That is, or have a spare Construction Yard far inland enough to be safe, or at the very least have an MCV at the ready.

Assessment

Pros

  • Submerged, invisible until detected by certain units
  • More powerful than Soviet Typhoon Attack Sub and Allied Destroyer.
  • Unrivaled in 1-on-1 duel in the sea.
  • Versatile, in addition to naval combat it can also bombard shore installations with its ballistic missile.
  • Missiles travel faster than Dreadnought's rocket.
  • Tier 2 unit, does not require Battle Lab and thus can be built earlier in game.
  • Strong armour.
  • Powerful in numbers.
  • Immune to Giant Squid's infection, which will turn to use its alternate smashing attack that deals very little damage to the Boomer's strong armor.

Cons

  • Vulnerable to any kind of attack when surfaced to fire its missiles.
  • Much more expensive than the Typhoon Attack Sub and Destroyer ($2000).
  • Cannot attack air targets.
  • Their missiles can be shot down by AA defenses unless deployed in numbers.
  • Still vulnerable to Ospreys.
  • Shortest range and weakest power of all "artillery" role ships (Dreadnought and Aircraft Carrier).
  • The Boomer's cost is equal to two Typhoon Submarines; the Boomer cannot handle attrition warfare when money is scarce.

Behind the Scenes

  • The land missile sprites used for the Boomers are actually early versions of the Dreadnought missiles recycled from the beta version of Red Alert 2.
