The Lockheed C-130 Hercules was a four-engine turboprop cargo aircraft. Capable of short takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found uses in a variety of other roles, including as a gunship, and for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refuelling and aerial firefighting.
The versatility of this aircraft was one of the reasons the Brotherhood of Nod infiltrated Lockheed, acquiring them and their uses on the battlefield as a ordnance delivery means. The Hercules would slow down over an airstrip and let the delivered vehicle drop on the tarmac from its cargo bay ramp. The Hercules was also used by GDI for delivery of ordnance and deployment of paratroopers among other things.
The aircraft served both sides with distinction. With developments in VTOL technology, GDI phased out the C-130 in favor for the Orca Dropship, Orca Transport and later the Ox. For more important personnel, Nod used the Personal transport aircraft.
