Somebody call for an engineer?!
- Combat Engineer

Combat engineers are Soviet field support infantry used in the Third World War.

Background[]

Deployment history[]

Capture that generator, Comrade!
- Tanya to the Combat Engineer at a mission in the North Sea

Combat engineers were often used to classical capture tech structures such as Oil Derricks, however they had one important role during the Third World War.

In The Unfathomable Fortress, the Allies and Soviets had to disable Wave-Force towers, protecting path to the Radar boat. Combat engineers, protected by Tanya, captured Imperial Generators to disable electricity to the towers.

RA3 Soviet logo The following is based on the Soviet campaign of Red Alert 3 and might contradict canon.

In the Soviet campaign, Combat engineers (and their guns) were used to "persuade" Swiss banks to support the Soviet campaign throughout the world (operation March of the Red Army). Despite their weakness in combat, they proved to be adept bank-robbers, holding up the Swiss bankers with their revolvers and forcing them to "put money in bag".

Later, Combat engineers were used in a secret lab on Mykonos (operation The Science of War), to extract information about new Allied research. In the mission "Blight on Big Apple" they captured the New York Stock Exchange building.

Abilities[]

Tactics[]

  • The engineer may engage single enemy infantrymen with his pistol, or other, weaker units; if your engineer and the enemy's is in a footrace toward a building, this is an extremely useful feature
  • The battle-bunker is cheap, very effective, and quick to set up; 5 garrisoned infantrymen (whether they're conscripts, flak-troopers, or Tesla troopers) are surprisingly effective
  • They are amphibious; unlike conscripts and other basic infantry, they may travel across water toward their destination
  • Their revolvers may be strong, but are very slow firing; do not expect a combat engineer to be able to hold off more than one enemy at a time
  • They are not cost-effective as multi-role infantry; they take a while to build and cost more than a conscript, who is universally better (slightly) in combat even if they lack engineering capability
  • They are fairly slow and cannot sprint to a destination nor heal friendly infantry. They are best used to trail behind your army, capturing fortifications as you go.

Changelog[]

  • Red Alert 3 patch 1.05:
    • during skirmish and multiplayer games, engineers now take 3 seconds to successfully capture a structure, during which time the engineer is vulnerable to attack
    • engineers targeted with cash bounty no longer provide funds when the engineer captures a structure
  • Red Alert 3 patch 1.11: fixed a bug that allowed the crusher crane to be captured by an engineer without the 3-second capture delay

Trivia[]

  • The Combat Engineer's pistol is somewhat useless and he will still lose in a one-on-one fight against any combat unit in the battlefield. Ironically, in the missions March of the Red Army and Blight on the Big Apple, the player can send in a Combat Engineer to single-handedly capture the Swiss Banks and the New York Stock Exchange respectively without any resistance.
