GDI Commandos in action

A commando is a highly-trained, specialized soldier who conducts military operations such as reconnaissance, unconventional warfare, and counter-terrorism actions. Commando units are typically composed of relatively small groups of highly-trained personnel equipped with specialist equipment and armament, operating with principles of self-sufficiency, stealth, speed and close teamwork, tasked with striking far behind enemy lines to eliminate crucial enemy assets, such as nuclear weaponry, headquarters units, and enemy leaders.

During Great World War II, the Commando formations did not exist per se. However, certain soldiers and special forces members can be classified as commando in the modern sense of the name. Such individuals were Tanya Adams, a German mercenary, and Volkov, a Soviet cybernetic soldier.

During the First Tiberium War, GDI and Nod commandos were highly trained military or mercenary personnel, used on a variety of high-stakes missions. However, they tend to be unruly and make numerous snide side comments, boasting about their abilities. As long as they fulfilled their mission, it was not a problem for commanders.

During the Second Tiberium War, traditional commando units were phased out, but both factions had an alternate means of filling the traditional commmando role. Nod relied on the Cyborg Commando, sporting heavy armor and an incredibly powerful plasma weapon. GDI recruited the Ghostalker, a mutant carrying a powerful railgun, from the Forgotten.

During the Third Tiberium War, the Forgotten Exodous and CABAL's betrayal had led to the need for new commando training programs for both GDI and Nod. GDI Commandos wore heavy armor with jump jets, while Nod Commandos were stealthy covert ops agents. Unlike most units, GDI and Nod commandos have displayed an immunity towards the mind controlling abilities of Scrin Masterminds. While unclear, it is theorized that the extremely intensive training that commandos undergo gives them the mental discipline to maintain self control even with against the psychic powers of a Mastermind.
