The Cruise Missile Silo was a superweapon building that was cut from the final release of Zero Hour.

Description[]

Designed to be one of superweapon structures that could be built by Alexis Alexander, it would have launched a single long ranged cruise missile at anywhere on the battlefield, much in the same way as the Chinese Nuclear Missile Silo.

Appearance-wise, it bears a strong resemblance to the laser projecting segment of the Particle Cannon, though with a fence surrounding it.

The building itself is more or less completed, and the only thing that prevents its usage in-game is the proper CommandButton's absence from the Superweapon General's dozer's CommandSet build list. This means that, if it is placed on a map with WorldBuilder, it can be captured and used normally.

The missile launched from the silo is slightly weaker than other superweapons (requiring a little over two strikes to eliminate an enemy superweapon), but would `have been the only superweapon to also blast enemies into the air in a fashion not unlike General Tao's specialized MiGs.

Bugs[]

On night maps, the Cruise Missile Silo's appearance turns into that of a Chinese Nuclear Missile Silo. When the target of the silo is being chosen, the target reticle is red, but after an impact site is chosen it turns blue. Additionally, when launched, the cruise missile itself fails to exit the camera's line of sight before turning (unlike the ballistics of all other superweapons), which results in the rather amusing sight of the missile zooming across the battlefield. The game also appears to have some difficulty with removing the projectile itself, as after it impacts a persisting cloud of the missile's exhaust can be seen.

The damage of the missile itself is rather impressive and has very few flaws. On occasion the missile will clip through the ground and fail to detonate. The Silo is also incapable of automatically repairing itself when damaged (unlike all other American structures), and only takes two minutes to charge - potentially intentional, but more likely a placeholder value.

Trivia[]

  • An alternate version of the building exists in the World Builder, simply named "ICBM". It functions in the same way as the Nuclear Missile Silo, aside from how it has a slightly shorter recharge time. It also has the same visual bug as the Cruise Missile Silo (turning into a Nuclear Missile Silo on night maps).
  • The Cruise Missile Silo would have been the only superweapon in the game that did not require an advanced technology structure.
  • The crane in the buildup animation is commented out for some reason. The rest of the animation functions normally.
