An EMP Cannon, or electromagnetic pulse device, was utilised by both GDI and Nod. It was capable of shutting down any vehicle or structure by disabling it's electronics. The EMP weapons were fairly widespread in the Second Tiberium War, as the technology was reliable and inexpensive. A mobile version, the Mobile EMP, was developed to provide close support for frontline units.

The cannon consisted of a large device mounted on a turret which concentrated and stored a significant amount of energy in a spherical shell, which it could launch at long distances. Once it detonated upon impact, a wave of energy spread out linearly from the impact site, creating a circle of moving charge that flooded the systems of a vehicle. Fortunately, most vehicles were reasonably shielded against such effects, and thus no permanent damage was normally done, but the charge still had to be cleared from the system - in the meantime nothing would work. The EMP device could disable all vehicles, structures, and Cyborgs in its area of effect, including the Cyborg Commando. Its range is limited.

EMP cannons were used various times, as in the final battle of the Firestorm Crisis. As part of CABAL's ferocious defense of its western flank, CABAL used an EMP cannon, followed by an ambush of Cyborgs. However, Nod forces were still able to move past CABAL's defenses, eventually capturing 3 of his codes and helping to bring down his Firestorm Defenses.

It should be noted that despite the vast amount of electrical systems present on board the Core Defender, CABAL managed to block the effects of EMP devices against his Core Defender.

After the Firestorm Crisis, the reliability and effectiveness of the EMP have prompted GDI to estabilish EMP Control Centers in major Yellow Zone cities to allow the dwellers to buy some time to evacuate.

During the Third Tiberium War, both Nod and GDI developed a counter to EMP: Nod had Master Computer Countermeasures available at their Temple of Nod, and GDI Steel Talons division created the Adaptive armour. Besides, EMP had also been developed into weapons: GDI uses [[[Shockwave artillery]], that basically are EMP shells fired from space, and EMP grenades; while Nod Marked of Kane Awakened and Enlightened are outfitted with EMP cannons. The Scrin invaders seem to have found an effective counter to EMP by using Energy field, that absorbs the pulse but disable it. The Scrin Annihilator Tripod also uses an EMP blast when close to enemy vehicles and buildings.
