Disambig
For other uses, see Pillbox.

The Pillbox was a basic defence employed by the Allies during Second World War.

Background[]

Armed with a rapid fire vulcan cannon, the Pillbox is ideal for defending your base from enemy infantry attacks.
- Red Alert manual(src)

A small bunker from which a soldier fired a mounted machine gun. It was used to prevent Soviet infantry advances. It's shell-like design gave the operators shelter from fragments thrown by the explosions of Soviet tank-shells and grenades. The pillboxes could also come in a camouflaged variation.

It was upgraded during the Third World War and was a round structure instead of a hexagonal design. The function and its role as an anti-infantry based defence still remained the same although the updated pillbox was significantly more durable and therefore more resistant to most kinds of fire.

Game building[]

It is perfect for taking out infantry, but its machine gun has very little effect against heavy vehicles, meaning Soviet tanks could easily overwhelm Pill Boxes. It was made worse that the pillbox was relatively lightly armored. Aircraft and long range weapons could also quickly destroy it with impunity. However, formations of Pillboxes used in conjunction with turrets and vehicles is a formidable and cost effective solution.

Trivia[]

  • The Pillbox bears a strong resemblance to the British Type 22 pillbox.
  • As seen in some early alpha and beta materials, originally pillbox was used by the Soviets as well. A beta version of the ninth Soviet mission still features Pillboxes under Soviet ownership.

Footnotes[]

  1. All official mission maps set the power consumption of the Pillbox to -10, rendering this its de facto power consumption for singleplayer content.
