Netrunners[1] are Kane's elite hackers, who were tasked with obtaining crucial data and intelligence from enemy networks. To this end, they used special VR equipment to uplink and project themselves into cyberspace. While this dramatically increased their efficiency, the uplink that went directly into their nervous system could be potentially lethal if the hacker encountered a firewall or was prevented by the programs within the target server from completing his hack.
