During the Great World War II, Soviet commanders were facing the problem of overwhelming numbers of Allied saboteurs infiltrating their bases. Looking for a simple solution, they finally received a flame-based turret, a very capable defence against infantry and light vehicles.
[edit] Overview
The basic workings of the tower were very simple - two top-mounted tanks with an extremely flammable liquid connected to several hoses, which discharged powerful, high pressure balls of flammable gas, which exploded in a firestorm upon contact with an enemy or solid ground. The gases used varied, but the result was the same an extremely hot and large fireball would incinerate anything it hit. Interestingly, it had the ability to ignore what ever was infront of the target,so it could fire at a target at the back of a squadron of infantry e.t.c. There are numerous hoses positioned all around the top of the tower, allowing for 360 degrees firing. They were also small enough to be deployed as internal security turrets, frequently found within Soviet complexes.
The defences were fully automated, governed by a sophisticated IFF system. However, lack of human control rendered them susceptible to hackers - indeed, several times did Allied infiltrators manage to convert a turret to their side or deactivate them completely by causing a spontaneous detonation of the fuel tanks. The AI was also inefficient at targeting, usually shooting the fireball at where the unit was, instead of where it would be going, meaning that faster units could always outrun it.
[edit] Combat proficiency
The flame balls were excellent at destroying light vehicles and burning infantry and the towers has more armor than the tesla coil. However, they were completely ineffective against heavier units, such as Medium Tanks and susceptible to long-range weaponry, such as M110 Artillery or Rocket Infantry squads. Some infantry who were fast enough were able to completely outrun the fireball, although most would still suffer burns.
After the Soviet defeat of GWWII, the Allies stripped the Soviets of the technology and Alexander Romanov made no attempt to redevelop it, causing it to be forgotten.
