Greece was a country situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. Famous for its ancient cultures and art, Greece has been home to civilisation for nearly three thousand years. By the twentieth century, Greece was bordered by Albania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and by Turkey to the east. The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of mainland Greece, while the Ionian Sea lies to the west. Both parts of the eastern Mediterranean basin feature a vast number of islands.
Greece lied at the juncture of Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is the heir to classical Greece, the Byzantine Empire, and nearly four centuries of Ottoman rule. Regarded as the cradle of western civilisation and being the birthplace of democracy, western philosophy, the Olympic Games, western literature, political science, major scientific principles and drama (including both tragedy and comedy), Greece has a particularly long and eventful history and a cultural heritage which has been considerably influential in Northern Africa and the Middle East and fundamentally formative for the culture of Europe and what is now called the West.
[edit] Great World War II
During the Great World War II, Greece was a member of the Allied Forces. The USSR attacked Greece during the war. While Greek national forces fought back with valour, they did so with little success. Colonel Nikos Stavros and Tanya Adams went to investigate the matters of the country during the invasion, including a visit to Stavros' hometown. They found the town massacred and were forced to retreat to a nearby Greek army base. Unfortunately, this base was barely holding the Soviets at bay and was eventually destroyed by a powerful aerial bombardment. Tanya and Stavros barely escaped with their lives and Greece was evacuated soon after.
The fall of Greece plunged Stavros into a deep depression, which severely hampered his effectiveness for a time. And while it is unconfirmed, some Allied veterans swear they saw Stavros avenge his homeland by assassinating Stalin in the aftermath of Moscow's fall.
[edit] The Tiberium age
Following the war, Greece was an ally of GDI. However, it was overtaken by Nod during the First Tiberium War, and Agent Delphi, a GDI spy, had to evacuate. Later, in a daring amphibious assault, Corinth (and presumably the rest of Greece thereafter) was retaken by GDI.
As of 2047, Greece is classified as a Red Zone and is uninhabited.
