Prior to the Second Tiberium War, Hassan was the leader of the Brotherhood of Nod. Installed by GDI he was merely a puppet leader that had to ensure that Nod wasn't a threat to anyone.
At first, Hassan was successful, he became the leader of the entire Brotherhood - or at the very least, one of the largest splinter groups. He had a specialized command center, a pyramid, constructed in Egypt, and from there he ruled over the Brotherhood with an iron fist. However, he did not manage to control the Black Hand. The greatest threat to his power, the Black Hand leader Slavik, was too powerful, and too suspicious to fall in line. As such, Hassan tried to get rid of Slavik, fabricating evidence against him by claiming Slavik was a GDI spy, while, in fact, Hassan himself was collaborating with GDI General Solomon all the time.
When Slavik escaped his execution with the aid of Oxanna, Hassan immediately ordered attacks against him and his followers, trying to cover up the disastrous event in Nod media. However, these desperate measures were not successful.
Slavik's escape was the death knell for Hassan. Once free, Slavik held all of the cards. One was the Montauk, which let him strike anywhere, another was Cabal, which let Slavik's forces outmaneuver Hassan's, and one was the brilliance of Slavik himself, who immediately set to work gaining the trust of the rest of the Brotherhood.
Eventually, Hassan was outmaneuvered by Slavik, and despite the pitched resistance of his Elite Guard at his command pyramid, he was caught. Hassan, beaten and bruised, was presented as a traitor to Nod during the ceremony signifying Nod's reunification. It was then that Kane announced his return to the Brotherhood, gloating at Hassan, whose throat was shortly afterwards slit by Slavik.
