Ion disruption tower
From Command and Conquer Wiki
GDI Ion Cannons had plagued the Brotherhood's war efforts ever since the destruction of the Temple of Nod during the First Tiberium War. However, the Brotherhood, being on the forefront of many scientific fields, began to experiment with ways to protect an area from the deadly satellite beams, however, Nod research stalled until the Firestorm Crisis. CABAL had free reign over Nod intel, and had managed to perfect a prototypical defense from it. This early disrution technology was mounted on his Core Defender, and managed to allow the defender to survive a direct hit from the cannon.
Following the Crisis, Nod began it's work anew. By the time of the Third Tiberium War, they had perfected a technology that would prevent the ionization of gases that allowed the Ion Cannon to fire. Mounted on towers, these Ion Disruption devices would prevent any activation of the Ion Cannon within a certain field.
Though the technology existed, it was sufficiently rare, as the three known Disruptors were built at Temple Prime. During the Siege of Temple Prime, the disruption towers were destroyed, and Redmond Boyle ordered an Ion Cannon strike, which inadvertantly triggered a liquid Tiberium explosion that destroyed much of Eastern Europe.
