The Mobile Launch Rocket System (MLRS) was the GDI’s main artillery unit during the First Tiberian War.

[edit] Background

Based on the United States M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System, the GDI’s MLRS units delivered multiple rocket rounds effective against infantry and vehicles, and somewhat less effectivly against aircraft. Typically, MLRS units were placed behind the lines, where their firepower could be brought to bear from long range, whilst being protected from direct attack. Mammoth Tanks and other heavy vehicles were ideal for this purpose.

However, there were weaknesses resulting from the emphasis on attack only - the MLRS was slow, lightly armored, and had a minimum range - it could not hit units or infantry that were immediately adjaicent to it. As a result, MLRS units usually moved in company with other units for protection. Nod found its attack cycle extremely effective against the MLRS - fast enough to get in within the MLRS's minimum range, and powerful enough to bring down its weak armor.

Nod also acquired their own MLRS units later in the war, however their M110 and G6 artillery pieces were much more easy to produce and acquire, and used much more often. Later in the war, Nod supplemented these MLRS units with the SSM Launcher.

[edit] In-game

The MLRS is GDI's primary artillery in the game, but, unfortunately, a high tier vehicle, meaning that it only appears late in the game and campaign. Nevertheless, it has the longest range out of all GDI vehicles, meaning that it can safely fire from behind tanks or other damage soaking vehicles. In Multiplayer/high technology matches, Nod can also use the MLRS.

[edit] Renegade

Costing a measly 450$ and available just seconds from a match's beginning, the MLRS is THE most powerful weapon available early on and as an artillery (whose missiles have limited tracking ability) it remains useful throughout the game, especially as a point making machine.

It is highly effective against dug-in infantry, some vehicles, and to an extent, aircraft.
