Due to the original Mammoth tank losing its power, GDI began research into their developed walker technology, to find a suitable, more powerful replacement incorporating recent technological advancements, with the intent of creating a war machine that would dominate the battlefield.

[edit] Development history
The Mammoth Mk. II was first developed at a secret GDI facility in the northern polar regions and field tested in a secret base in Great Britain. However, despite great secrecy, Nod forces learned of its development, and sent a commando force to destroy the prototype. While successful in slightly delaying the walker's introduction, the Mammoth Mk. II was already in final stages of development and entered limited production within GDI.
Tests conducted prior to the prototype's destruction also proved that it could engage and defeat land and air units with ease; automobiles and Wolverine armor were destroyed in a single shot by the enormous railguns, while a decomissioned X-66 Mammoth tank took only two shots to be completely annihilated. The test building destroyed also yielded quickly and a remotely controlled Orca fighter was literally shot out of the sky.
Despite the successes, the project was discontinued (due to costs and perceived vulnerability to explosives) in the favor of the Mammoth 27, and the last unit was built at the Los Angeles San Pedro war factory, marking the end of the walker Mammoths at 12th March, 2039. This move was opposed by conservative GDI commanders, among them Colonel Nick Parker, decorated war veteran.
[edit] Design overview
The succesful unit was an enormous quadrupedal walker, over twice the size of the GDI "Titan" medium battle mechanized walker, making it by far the largest unit fielded during the Second Tiberium War. This behemoth, in addition to exceptionally strong armor plating (able to withstand fire from the Obelisk of Light for prolonged periods of time), was armed with several weapon systems:
- Twin enormous, side-mounted railguns (medium to long range) with the capacity to destroy moderately armored tanks in a single discharge.
- An anti-aircraft missile module mounted on the rear of each railgun.
- Twin auto-cannons underneath the 'head'
This armament allowed the Mammoth to engage massive amounts of targets simultaneously and emerge victorious. Its range was great enough that it could destroy most units (eg. tick tanks), from outside of their range. It was also extremely resistant to enemy fire, as well as with a crew of engineers inside, it could self repair to 50%.
[edit] Evaluation
The railguns by themselves were powerful enough to kill most armoured units in a single discharge and rip through enemy structures, but suffered from a long cooldown time. Due to its armor plating, the Mammoth was capable of assaulting an enemy base on its own and leveling key structures. Among Brotherhood units, only the Cyborg Commando was powerful and skilled enough to challenge it alone. Furthermore, a Mammoth could be transported by an Orca Carryall, allowing it to drop in anywhere a GDI commander would require its assistance, as long as there were no anti-aircraft weaponry present in the area.
The anti-aircraft missiles, however, were slow and had a rather short range. This meant that they were effective only against slower moving enemy aerial units, in particular, the Harpy, while faster aircraft, such as the Banshee could easily outrun the missiles and seriously damage the walker with it's plasma guns.
The positioning of its enormous railguns on its sides, instead of on a dedicated turret, required that the entire walker be forced to turn in order to engage targets moving across the horizon, making the Mk.II extremely cumbersome.
Another dangerous situation was when the walker was surrounded by hostile armor. The railguns were powerful, but couldn't match an entire battalion of Nod tanks continuously battering the walker.
Though the Mammoth did indeed have several shortcomings, GDI commanders never forgot the lessons taught by the walker as it was quietly phased out of combat in favor of smaller, much cheaper vehicles. A single, massive tank was not only valuable for its morale value, but in providing a powerful spear point in GDI's classic massive assaults, something smaller tanks cannot provide. Fortunately, in the late 2040s, GDI's new Zone Operations Command unveiled an incredibly large, mobile, tiberium harvesting and refining vehicle to be used in their reclamation efforts.
[edit] Behind the scenes
IT resembles the Star Wars AT-AT Walkers due to 4 legs and powerful guns.
