Brigadier General Mark Jamison Sheppard was the supreme commander of the Global Defence Intiative. Under his leadership GDI forces around the world waged the war against the Brotherhood of Nod during the First Tiberium War. Sheppard was a United States brigadier general before he was tapped to run the newly formed GDI as its Chief of Staff.
Sheppard was at times absent from his command post for various reasons, including an UN inquiry into GDI's supposed atrocities. He was an able and charismatic commander, and managed to turn Kane's media attack around to benefit GDI, securing new funding, allowing the ORCA project to be completed, and countering Nod's assault, eventually arriving at Kane's doorstep in Sarajevo. It appeared that battling Kane had a certain personal character to him.
He had a son, Logan Sheppard, who was also in GDI, but was instead a commando, and often had to put up with other troopers' hostility due to him being a general's son.
