Mauritania was a country in northwest Africa. It was bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, by Senegal on the southwest, by Mali on the east and southeast, by Algeria on the northeast, and by the Moroccan-annexed territory of Western Sahara on the northwest. It is named after the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania. The capital and largest city is Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast.

During the First Tiberium War, Kane wanted to take control of Niger and to this end he required Mauritania, so as to prevent GDI's A-10 Warthogs from destroying the forces invading Niger. To this end, a Nod commander estabilished a forward base in Mauritania at Tidjikdja. During this operation, the country was an islamic republic, 48% corruptible, home to 2,059,000 citizens with a laughable military, 28% likely to resist.

It became a Yellow Zone afterward (designated part of the Y-2 zone).
