The Mi-24 Hind was the main gunship of the Soviet Union in the Great World War II, acting as a mobile weapons platform to counter Allied infantry and destroy buildings. It was extensively used against the Allied Forces during their assaults on Soviet cities and positions. The main weapon of the gunship was a chaingun, with rockets using only as a secondary weapon. They were capable of killing most infantry in one or two shots. And their chainguns were surprisingly effective against buildings and vehicles due to the large caliber of the weapon.
Two top mounted turboshaft engines were driving a mid-mounted 17.3 m five-blade main rotor and a three blade tail rotor. The engine positions gave the aircraft its distinctive double air intake. It had a characteristic tandem cockpit with a "double bubble" canopy. Weapon hardpoints were provided by two short mid-mounted wings (which also provided lift), each offering three stations. The load-out mix was mission dependent; they could be tasked with close air support, anti-tank operations, or aerial combat. The body was heavily armored and the titanium rotor blades could resist impacts from .50 caliber (12.7 mm) rounds. The cockpit was over pressurized to protect the crew in NBC conditions. The craft used a retractable tricycle undercarriage.
The gunships were decommissioned following the Great World War II and replaced by modern helicopters such as RAH-66 Comanches.
