In the 2020 War against the GLA, the Chinese used Nuclear missile silos to launch very powerful nuclear missiles at enemy targets. Once launched, it is impossible to stop them, and would detonate with incredible force. While the Americans developed high-tech particle beam cannons to avoid damaging the environment, China chose to improve the existing nuclear weaponry. The result of the research were new types of nuclear warheads - with ionizing radiation and fallout brought to a minimum - thus avoiding long-term environmental damage of the "traditional" nuclear bombs (like the ones possessed by USA, Russia and UK), enabling them to be used as a battlefield and tactical "superweapon". With this endeavor, China became the forefront leader in nuclear technology, and their new arsenal was configured for delivering precise, but devastating blows. Due to the inherited (strategical) value of nuclear weapons, a special protocol was enacted and stated that the deployment of these structure must be authorized only after a Propaganda Center has been established. This arrangement ensure the usage of nuclear technology will not harm China's interest in international forum.
Based on the size of the explosion and the fallout, a reasonable estimate for the explosive force is about a few kilotons. The nuclear missile could wreak unprecedented destruction across vast areas, leaving the enemies battered and disorganized. The blast shatters more weakly armored structures, eliminates armored vehicles, and leaves radiation behind, which would damage all remaining vehicles and infantry.
|Nuclear Missile||When launched, the nuclear missile will fly to its destination and detonate in a horribly powerful fireball, incinerating anything nearby and sending shockwaves with winds of several hundreds of kilometres per hour in all directions. Nothing but the strongest buildings can survive this kind of power, and even in its wake it leaves radiation which is deadly to infantry and also damages military hardware.|
|Land Mines||Create mines around the Nuclear Missile Silo and harm enemy that pass through.||Available for all Chinese buildings except Speaker Towers for a cost of $600.|
|Neutron Mine||Upgrades the mines to the neutron mines around the Nuclear Missile Silo and harm infantry that pass through. Kills the crew of vehicles when they pass through.||Available for all Chinese buildings except Speaker Towers for a cost of $500. Requires Land mine to be installed.|
The following upgrades are available from the Nuclear Missile Silo:
|Uranium Shells||Cost $2500. Increased the damage done by Battlemasters and Overlord Tanks/Emperor Overlord Tanks by 25% and caused their shells to leave residual radiation. Automatically upgraded by General Tsing Shi Tao. Not available to General Shin Fai.|
|Nuclear Tanks||Cost $2000. Increases the speed of Battlemasters and Overlord Tanks/Emperor Overlord Tanks by 25%. Automatically upgraded by General Tsing Shi Tao. Not available to General Shin Fai.|
|Neutron Shells||Cost $2500. Granted Nuke Cannons the ability to switch to Neutron Shells, eliminating all infantry (including vehicle crews) on impact. Not available to General Ta Hun Kwai.|
|Tactical Nuke MiG||Cost $2000. Equipped the MIG with a far more devastating Nuclear payload. Only available to General Tsing Shi Tao.|
Ironically for a missile silo, much of this structure was above ground, and it consisted of a small command center and a horizontally loaded missile launcher, more akin to the launching mechanism behind a Scud missile than an actual silo, and several "casing"(presumably empty casing) dump. The missile launcher chamber is double tasked as a missile construction and a refuel hangar. When required, the missile would be positioned by a powerful piston into an upright position, while the roof retracted. Once fully vertical, the weapon fired. The structure itself was heavily armored with steel and concrete. The destruction of these structures will not "produce" fallout but the resulting explosion can harm any unit that is close it.
The silo was very expensive and used up a large amount of power, and it also revealed itself to all opponents. This made it (or supporting power plants) attractive targets for enemy forces, who would at all costs want to stop the weapon from being launched. Although great against vehicles and lightly defended buildings the nuclear missile was considered less effective than the Particle Cannon and Scud Storm in the war against the GLA, mostly due to the GLA's use of holes beneath their buildings through which personnel could be deployed to rebuild them (although the radiation would kill one or two workers off before they started).
Also notable was that the Nuclear missile was the slowest firing superweapon and as so would lose in a battle against the other weapons as well as be cautiously used in case of a opposing superweapons.
They were first deployed during Operation: Nuclear Winter, where the PLA had entrusted a general of great tactical brilliance to drive the GLA out of Asia.
When the GLA conquered the US European Central Command in Stuttgart, Germany using captured Chinese weaponry, the Chinese government was humiliated enough to order a nuclear strike against the GLA forces that occupied the American base. They later apologised to the European leaders and restrained their use of tactical nukes until the final battle near Hamburg, where the GLA made their last stand using captured American technology.
Real world analogue
The nuclear missile silo has a close resemblance to the early SM-65 "Atlas-D" above-ground launchers. Named "coffins", this concrete above-ground structures were designed to store the intercontinental ballistic missile horisontally and put it vertically for refueling just before launch. This system were used to store "Atlas-D" and "Atlas-E" missiles, but with the advent of modification "Atlas-F" (which where silo-based), has been declared obsolete.
If a silo's construction is completed under low power, the countdown timer for that silo starts at 6:35 rather than the regular 6:00 (this only applies to the silo once - after first launch, the countdown timer resets to 6:00).
All nuclear silos built during the Generals Challenge against Tao have their countdown timers starting at 12:00 instead of the usual 6:00.
