There they are!

The RPG Trooper was the basic anti-tank infantry unit of the GLA.

Background

Defending the Tunnel Network!
- RPG Trooper

Armed with the Type 69, a Chinese copy of the famous RPG-7. The RPG Trooper was trained to fire at both ground and air targets. A pair of RPG Troopers would emerge from the Tunnel Network to protect its entrance when it completed. It should be noted that some generals like Dr. Thrax equipped their RPG Troopers' weapons with different warheads, such as toxin-tipped rockets, and due to the corrosive nature of the anthrax, would be able to dish out more damage than normal RPG Troopers.

Strategy

Get them! Get them now!
- RPG Trooper attacking

RPG Troopers fulfilled the basic function of anti-vehicle infantry in the GLA. Garrisoned in buildings, RPG Troopers could provide a solid defense against attacks by enemy vehicles. As the war progressed the GLA developed the Battle Bus, which could also allow infantry to fire from within it, acting as a moving bunker. This protected RPG Troopers from machine gun fire and simply being run over, allowing them to hit-and-run better against slow-moving tanks.

Counters

Somebody, wish me a blessing!
- RPG Trooper under fire

However, out in the open they were vulnerable to riflemen (for example, a Ranger) and anti-infantry weaponry. Their rockets were almost useless against infantry, making them easy targets for basic troops. Garrisoned, they were vulnerable to any weapon capable of clearing buildings.

Variants

Dr. Thrax

Toxicate them!
- Thrax's RPG Trooper
  • The RPG is modified to fire rockets that spread toxins on detonation. When the Anthrax Gamma upgrade is purchased by the player, the RPG Troopers' attack damage increases by 30%.
  • Special: In Mission USA 5 Zero Hour, the RPG Troopers' model is changed slightly:

General Rodall 'Demo' Juhziz

There may be some collateral damage!
- Juhziz's RPG Trooper
  • The RPG packs more of an explosive punch compared to standard RPG Troopers. His RPG Troopers, like most of his other units, are also packed with explosives when upgraded and will detonate when killed.

Prince Kassad

  • Kassad does not have a specialised RPG Trooper outside of the campaign.
  • Special: In mission GLA 2 Zero Hour however, Prince Kassad's RPG Troopers are fully cloaked.

Trivia

We must be careful!
- RPG Trooper on the move
  • Ironically, these units carried what resembles the Chinese Type 69 RPG as seem in the icon, (note its bi-pod) which, like other Chinese made weapons, is in common use among Middle Eastern armed groups in reality. However, the in-game unit depicts them as using the RPG-27 instead.
  • Although the RPG Troopers function as anti-air units, in reality, RPGs are not very useful against aerial targets aside from incredibly slow, low-flying aircraft (such as hovering helicopters), as they are not the same as missiles fired by Missile Defenders or Tank Hunters that can track a target. This also applies to the ECM Tank, which should not be able to deflect unguided rockets such as those fired by the RPG Trooper.
  • The Toxin General's custom RPG Trooper (used only in the campaign) is armed with the M72 LAW. Like the Type 69, it too is a poor choice as an anti-air weapon as it lacks tracking capabilities.
  • In addition, the M72 LAW is a single use recoiless rifle. After a rocket is fired, the tube is useless, and you have to grab another. This would not be a very good idea to begin with, due to the weight of multiple LAWs.
  • In real life, RPGs are very effective against infantry and tanks, but for balancing reasons, it is only effective against tanks and aircraft.
  • Both the Demo General and Toxin General's RPG Troopers are supposed to have additional exclusive quotes (see Selected Quotes above), but they goes unused. Also, the RPG Trooper appears to be paranoid about the enemy, judging from his quotes.
  • In early stages of the game, the RPG was orginally called a Tunnel Defender. However, they were renamed to the RPG Trooper instead. These can be found inside the game codes.
