Railgun upgrade is an upgrade used by GDI and Steel Talons in Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath.
Background[]
Following the Second Tiberium War, GDI continued research into railgun technology, eventually solving the power consumption issue that once limited the weapon to enormous vehicles like the Mammoth Mk. II. As a result, more compact railguns were developed, which could be mounted on most armored vehicles.[1]
Railgun technology offers numerous advantages over conventional ballistics, chief among them being its intensely superior firepower.[2]
Game Effect[]
The railgun upgrade greatly increases the firepower of affected units. In addition, it also makes them more accurate, allowing them to target infantry more effectively. Units with this upgrade are affected by the Steel Talons' railgun accelerator support power.
Predator tank | Titan | Mammoth tank | Guardian cannon | Battle base | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Without upgrade | 400 | 450 | 500 | 200 | 500 |
With upgrade | 572 | 625 | 1200 | 500 | 525 |
Though the railguns' intended purpose was to increase damage against enemy armor, it served surprisingly well against enemy infantry, especially those not equipped with heavy armor. Railgun-outfitted vehicles could cut through lower tier infantry (i.e. Militant Squads) with a single shot, but notably had to do so for each individual squad member - thus reducing its effectiveness against squads with high unit counts, such as the aforementioned Militant Squad, or heavier infantry such as the Scrin's elite Shock Troopers (who were incapable of being killed by a single shot).
Commanders should note that, with the upgrade's high cost and correspondingly long research time, they should not expect to be able to access railguns until a reasonable about of time after they begin research, and should thus plan their strategy accordingly.
ZOCOM does not outfit their units with Railguns, potentially because of their greater emphasis on anti-Tiberium harmonic resonance technology.
Changelog[]

- cost increased by 66% to $5000.
- Mammoth tank rate of fire with railguns reduced by 35%, but attack power increased proportionally
- cost increased by 66% to $5000.
- Tiberium Wars patch 1.06: fixed an exploit that caused any unit or structure to become invincible if force-fired upon by a Mammoth tank that had been upgraded with railguns
- Kane's Wrath patch 1.02: cost reduced to $4000

Trivia[]
- There is a minor difference in who the Railgun upgrade is applied to between Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath; in Tiberium Wars, Guardian Cannons and their mobile counterparts found on Battle Bases were unaffected by the upgrade, despite using the same shell-based weapon as the Predator and the Mammoth. In Kane's Wrath, this was fixed.
