The Rifleman Squad was the main battle unit of the Global Defense Initiative infantry corps during the Third Tiberium War.

They were armed with automatic GD-2 rifles and all are equipped with standard GDI body armour. Their squads are composed of six soldiers. The riflemen were well trained, and seeked all cover possible for them. In a battle against a Nod Militia squad, the Rifleman squad would usually emerge victorious due to superior training, albeit with casualties. If the militants would be led by a confessor however, the result could be less certain-unless the Rifleman Squad were bunkered up, they usually ended up losing. They proved to be a force to be reconed with when fighting the Scrin Buzzers, Shock troopers or even light anti-vehicle vehicles such as the Seeker.
If ordered, the soldiers used the portable shovels they carried to create foxholes, acting as bunkers, providing necessary cover. They could also be outfitted with advanced Composite armour or Tiberium field suits that provided them with better protection than regular body suits. On the battle field, they maintained their fitness by doing push ups, usually in groups of five or so. Although well trained, Riflemen had difficulties when fighting against elite Nod forces, especially the ones that were armed with flamethrowers.

Like all GDI infantry, they could be shuttled around the battlefield in the V-35 Ox. Some infantry squads were also members of elite GDI Airborne divisions.
Being the basic infantry of GDI, Riflemen saw battle on every front, but generally suffered heavy casualties in the process. However, they were dedicated and well-trained and accomplished tasks set for them to the best of their limited abilities. On many occasions, however, they had been responsible for holding the line until reinforcements arrive, such as in the mission to defend the Pentagon.

The Rifleman was a counterpart to Nod's Millitants and Scrin's Buzzers and usually won in equal fights against them. They also served as a tier 1 cheap scout unit. When fully upgraded, they had more armor via the Composite Armor upgrade if they served in the GDI army, or if they served in the ZOCOM, Tiberium Field Suits, which granted them with more armor and Tiberium radiation protection. They could also hold back attacking enemy units or protect a position by constructing Foxholes until heavier units arrive to assist them. They could also be summoned as Paratroops via reinforcement support power.
