[edit] Great World War III (Red Alert 2)
In RA2, the Soviets no longer have the old Flame Towers, which were also an effective base defense, despite causing unintended splash damage to nearby units. It is replaced by a successor, the Sentry Gun, an inexpensive anti-infantry oriented base defense. It features two guns, which may or may not be chainguns like those on the somewhat-similar GDI Vulcan Tower, mounted on a metal turret. It was useful against infantry, and for keeping SEALs out of bases and slowing down GI advances.
[edit] World War III (Red Alert 3)
The Sentry Gun is seen again in RA3, this time as an almost Pillbox-like emplacement featuring a Conscript wielding a heavy machine gun. Like all defenses other than walls, it is buildable over water. It cannot, however, target aircraft and does little damage to armored vessels, such as Assault Destroyers and Naginata Cruisers. Yari Mini-Subs are also a threat to it, if deployed over water. On land, it is extremely weak against heavy armor (in particular a certain Soviet super-heavy tank called the Apocalypse, and the King Oni)
[edit] Counters
Although primarily an anti-infantry emplacement, the gun was capable of dealing decent amounts of damage to enemy armour, especially the 'thin-skinned' advanced Allied tanks, but the sentry gun is totally useless against aircraft.
In Red Alert 3, if the Sentry Gun was deployed over water, torpedoes from Yari Mini-Subs are a threat to it.
