The Type 671 Shchuka (Pike) was a nuclear-powered submarine that was originally put into service by the Soviet Union shortly before Great World War II. Victor-class subs featured a teardrop shape, which allowed them to travel at high speed. These vessels were primarily designed to attack Allied navy (especially cruisers) and shore installations.
The submarine was outiftted with torpedo bays and had to come to shallow waters to fire it's torpedoes, due to the nature of most naval engagements (close to landmasses). The torpedoes were frighteningly effective against most naval vessels and naval yards. The submarines suffered from the lack of any land attack means and had to be supported by aircraft. Another drawback was their susceptibility to depth charges launched by Allied destroyers or gunboats. After the war, the
671 Shchuka was replaced by improved submarine designs such as the Nod submarine.
