Union of Soviet Socialist Republics/Союз Советских Социалистических Республик
Continent: Europe, Asia
Affiliation: Warsaw Pact -during GWW2, United Nations - after GWW2 and before disbandment

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), commonly referred to as the Soviets, was a Communist superpower most notable for being one of the two main warring factions in Great World War II. The precise circumstances surrounding the beginning of the war are unclear, but it is believed that the Soviet leader at the time, Joseph Stalin, was primarily responsible for instigating it. Under Stalin's leadership, the USSR was transformed from an agrarian backwater into an industrial and military powerhouse, capable of fighting the Allies on an equal footing and possessing a number of advanced technologies (such as the Iron Curtain and Tesla coils).

The offical emblem of the Soviets was the Hammer-and-Sickle, with a yellow starburst on a red field.

[edit] Ideology

The USSR was a Communist State, following an ideology originally inspired by Marxism-Leninism but increasingly dominated by Stalin's own ideas (Stalinism). Stalin originally came to power while criticizing his opponents within the Communist Party for focusing too much on the idea of a global working class revolution. Instead of this revolution, he proposed (and enforced) the doctrine of "socialism in one country," which essentially said that the USSR should only be concerned with its own internal affairs and ignore the rest of the world.

By the early 1950s, Stalin appears to have had a change of heart, and he became sufficiently interested with the outside world that he decided to launch an invasion of Europe and China.

[edit] Base of Operations

Entire Eurasian peninsula. Command posts identified in Moscow, Kiev, Stalingrad, Khartoum and Da Nang.

[edit] Military strength

Soviet tanks, like this heavy tank were powerful but slow.

Enlisted forces exceeded 14 million. Non-regular forces, like police and NKVD (KGB), about 7 million. Soviet arsenal was primarily built around the concept of sheer, brutal force and expendability, using advanced but conventional based technology. The main attack force were to be heavy tanks supported by V2 launchers and thousands of infantrymen plus a strong fleet of advanced MiG fighter/bomber aircraft and the less reliable Yak attack planes.

The Soviet navy boasted hundreds of submarines whose lack of heavy weapons and armour was made up for with the element of stealth warfare and their hit and run capability.

The military forces of the USSR (notably the Russian SSR) were noted to having the cheapest cost compared to the other powers, while maintaining an effective military strength.

[edit] Economic strength

Considerable operating assets believed to have exceeded 486.2 billion Swiss Francs. Exact values unknown due to closed nature of Soviet system as well as lack of free-enterprise system.

[edit] Political strength

Since every person in the Soviet Union had to be a member of the Communist Party, an incredible agent network of over 200 million citizens has infiltrated the governments of most Pan Africa, Pan India and Pan Asian gouvernments with suspected strongholds in Mexico City and Vancouver.

[edit] Early History

The USSR was established from the former Russian Empire in 1922, after a long period of revolution and civil war. In 1917, the imperial gouvernment collapsed, and replaced by a Provisional Government. However, Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks soon overthrew the Provisional Government and seized power. A complex series of events then led to the Russian Civil War, which the Bolsheviks won. This left them in control of Russia, and they formed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The Communist Party began to change their nation's society and economy based on their ideas.

Perhaps the Soviet's most technologically advanced weapon, the Iron Curtain.

Lenin died in 1924, and through political maneuvering, Stalin rose to power as the leader of the USSR. Interestingly, in 1928, Stalin was against a worldwide socialist revolution, preferring instead the idea of "socialism in one country," which meant focusing on Russia alone. During the 1930's, Stalin changed the USSR into a totalitarian police state, while developing a powerful industrial economy. However, millions of people died in Stalin's purges; they were executed or had died in penal-labour camps, also known as 'gulags'.

Technological advances began to develop greatly since the last Great War. There were strides in many fields of science and technology. The least of which was the Soviet's own armoured and air force.

[edit] Great World War II

Stalin's "Socialism in One Country" was soon to change in 1953. The General Secretary (under alleged influence of Kane) geared the USSR towards imperialism and building up his military might. The Great World War II was ignited with the USSR invading Europe and China.

During the conflict, the USSR had the upper hand initially, it soon found itself outmaneuvered and eventually defeated. During the war, the Red Army Top Brass was suffering from in-fighting, with several officers plotting against and backstabbing others. In the Battle of Moscow, the USSR was defeated, and Stalin was killed. However, Stalin's mysterious "advisor" disappeared after the war, leaving the whole country unhindered of being taken over by Nod, that would be the case, should the USSR win the Great World War 2.

[edit] Dissolution

The USSR was eventually dissolved, breaking up into a number of independent nations, many developing democratic styles of government.
