Produced during the Second Tiberium War, as well as during the Firestorm Crisis, Wolverines were powerful anti-personnel units operated by GDI. These units were mechs, moving by walking from one point to another. They enjoyed high speed, and were equipped with a pair of Gatling guns mounted onto each arm for engaging enemy units. They replaced the Hum-Vees previously used during the First Tiberium War in the scouting and anti-infantry patrol roles. Wolverines could not pivot at the waist, and had to physically turn to engage an enemy unit. This meant that they had traded maneuverability for armor when compared to a regular infantry unit.
Wolverines reached mass production in 2030 during the Second Tiberium War. However, they were produced and used by GDI against Nod troops in minor skirmishes as early as 2023.
The Wolverine powered armor was replaced by the Pitbull ATV in the reconnaissance role, due to maintenance costs of the armour and GDI's wider abandonment of the majority of walker technology. The most recent incarnation of the APC, with its machine guns, has taken over in the general anti-infantry role. A Wolverine Mk. II was briefly in service before being meeting the same fate as the original Wolverine.
However, the development of the Wolverine, as with it's predecessor, he X-O Powersuit, has paved the way for research and creation of the Zone Trooper armour.
