During the Great World War II, the Yak was a Soviet aircraft typically used against infantry. It was cheap and quick to build, but fragile against and a free snack to any form of anti-aircraft attack. The Yak was so lethal against them that it was nicknamed "The Infantry Eraser". It was also good against lightly armored vehicles and structures, but useless against heavier opponents. The Russian craft was cheap and quick to build, but fragile against any form of anti-aircraft attack.

After the war, the Yak was phased out in favor of jet propelled aircraft.

The loss of the war resulted in the Soviets losing most of their air force. During the next war their air force was comprised almost entirely of Kirovs.
